A few years ago I had possibly one of the most frightening, disgruntling, yet highly comical moments of my life. The story goes as so…
One night I had fallen asleep in my mom’s room watching TV. I had always liked her bed better than mine. It was about double the size so there was more room to stretch. Although, the bed didn’t feel as roomy that night, what with my mother and two dogs sharing it with me. Anyway it was about 2:30 in the morning when my mom had abruptly woken me up. She was whispering to me, “Do you hear that?” Shaking, I listened to the drawers in my room being pulled out of their place, several papers rustling, and quick footsteps, as if someone was helping themselves to my assets, assuming no one was home. They made such a ruckus, you would think they were trying to get caught. I immediately grabbed my phone and dialed 911, yet something had told me to wait. I held my phone, 911 just a button away, and continued to listen to the intruder ransack my room. Suddenly, the noise stopped, as well as my heart. Footsteps were heard coming down the hallway towards my mom’s room. The night light in the bathroom aided in casting a shadow of the approaching figure. I gasped as my mom clinged tightly to me. Yet, I exhaled a calming breath that unleashed a peace over me as I unhooked my mom’s nails from my arms. I was no longer afraid. I just had… a feeling. Sure enough, the figure came wandering into the room. The careless culprit’s identity was soon to be revealed. My mom turned on the light, and there he was. The tubby troublemaker. Sammy, my old dog, sat there grinning with a bag of Disney Princess fruit snacks hanging from his mouth. Boy was he proud, having discovered the drawer I had hidden the box in. When I went to inspect the damage in my room there laid 3 drawers with clothes spilling out of them that were pulled out onto the floor, along with the bags of fruit snacks scattered around, and the cardboard box chewed. Needless to say my mom scolded Sammy for almost giving her a heart attack, and I scolded him for eating my snacks and messing up my room. But the story was just too amusing to be completely enraged. Even our family and friends laughed at our mistaken misfortune. Despite the unnerving events, that night had to be one of the most memorable moments, and a perfect example of Sammy’s lovable, yet mischievous character. May he rest in peace.
